The Muskegon Lumberjacks faced the fifth place Green Bay Gamblers this past weekend. After beating their opponent 8-3 on Friday, November 23, Muskegon was poised to take another victory. Muskegon fans and players are accustomed to winning. They sit first in the Eastern Conference holding a 15-3-0 record. The Gamblers nonetheless were ready to redeem the previous night’s loss. Coach Mike Hamilton rested usual starter Brandon Bussi and gave backup goalie Cullen DeYoung the start on Saturday, November 24. The Green Bay Gamblers consistently shut down the home-town team resulting in a 6-3 loss to Muskegon.
Muskegon and Green Bay stayed on each other’s heels for most of the first and second periods. DeYoung was unbeaten in the first period stopping all 12 shots faced. The teams ended the second period 2-1 in favor of the visiting team. In the third period, a surge of power-play goals and defensive breakdowns would seemingly knock Muskegon out of contention with a 6-1 deficit. It wasn’t until Alex Gaffney scored at the 14:44 mark of the third period that the Jacks would get a second wind. A goal from Egor Afanasyev at 16:42 kept hope alive, but it was too late.
Despite the outcome, the Lumberjacks can take away some lessons from this loss. No game is given and every game is earned.
