The USHL Muskegon Lumberjacks ended 2018 by improving their record to 23-5-1 after beating the Madison Capitols Friday, December 28 and Saturday, December 29. Muskegon also beat the Chicago Steel on New Year’s Eve to cap off a long three-game weekend.
The visiting Madison Capitols would put up a good fight in both games versus the Lumberjacks. Despite the outcome of both games, Madison proved to be a team that competes. With two goals from each Mikael Hakkarainen and James McIsaac and another tally from Egor Afanasyev, the Jacks claimed a 5-2 victory in the first of two matches. The two teams wouldn’t get much of a break from each other with a game the following day. Madison would again bring out that firey play and force the Lumberjacks to pull goalie Brandon Bussi for an extra skater late in the third. Igor Larionov II scored his second of the night to tie the game at three apiece with just eleven seconds in the third period. Captain Colby Bukes netted his third goal of the season to win 4-3.
Refreshed from a day off the Lumberjacks were poised to play long-time rival Chicago Steel on New Year’s Eve. Western Michigan University Brandon Bussi would stop 29 Steel shots. Improved now to a 2.07 GAA and 0.926 SV% – Bussi now has six shutouts to his name this season. Egor Afanasyev would get another goal against Chicago improving him to the status of first in the league for points. Egor currently stands at 15 goals and 20 assists for a total of 35 points. Captain Nolan Sullivan would seal the score with a goal to win it 2-0.
