The Muskegon Lumberjacks faced tough weekend rivals in the Fargo Force and Team USA NTDP. After losing the Friday before in a shoot-out to Fargo Force the Lumberjacks faced Team USA on Saturday, January 26. The Lumberjacks now hold the second place (57 points) on the leaderboard in the USHL behind current leader Tri-City Storm (60 points). Team USA NTDP maintains seventh place in Eastern Conference with 35 points.
Team USA struck first at 2:05 in the first period off a goal from Trevor Zegras. It wasn’t until the second period that the Lumberjacks would answer with a goal from Mikael Hakkarainen. With the goal, Hakkarainen tallied his 100th career point and 13th goal of the season. Muskegon and Team USA remained tied until John Beecher, Domenick Fensore and Trevor Zegras would finish them off after sixty minutes. Star-studded Team USA would shut down the Lumberjacks point producers allowing only 22 shots on goal. Team USA goalie Spencer Knight would face and stop 21/22 shots while Brandon Bussi of the Jacks would face 46 shots and save 42.
Stars of the Eastern Conference match-up included Trevor Zegras with two goals on the night. Hakkarainen would get star number two with the only goal. Brandon Bussi would get the third star for his stellar performance in net despite the game’s outcome. The Muskegon Lumberjacks are currently 27-8-2-1 and maintain first place in the Eastern Conference.
