Nick Abruzzese – 2 Games Played – 2 Goals, 3 Assists
Nick Abruzzese of the Chicago Steel is the USHL forward of the week. Abruzzese would start his week with two goals Friday against Sioux Falls before adding three helpers against Sioux City on Saturday.
Abruzzese is now up to 18 goals and 54 points in 41 games this season. His 54 points lead the entire USHL and his 36 assists are good for second among all USHL players. He’s also tied for the team lead on the Steel with 18 goals and leads the team in assists and points.
Ronnie Attard – 2 Game Played –5 Goals, 2 Assists
Ronnie Attard of the Tri-City Storm is the USHL’s defender of the week. Attard would start his week off strong with an impressive four goals in a 7-0 shutout against the Green Bay Gamblers on Friday. He’d score another goal and add two assists to finish his seven-point weekend.
Attard’s four-goal performance would mark the first time that a USHL defender scored four goals in a single game since Quinn Hughes (Vancouver Canucks prospect) did so on Dec. 30, 2015.
Attard is now up to 18 goals and 37 points on the season which ties him for the team-lead and puts him in second among all USHL defenders.
Akira Schmid – 2 Games Played – 2 Wins, 1.02 GAA, .967 SV%
Akira Schmid of the Omaha Lancers is the USHL goaltender of the week. Schmid would win both games he played over the weekend courtesy of a shootout.
He’d start the week with his first career shutout (16 saves). Stopping all three Sioux City shooters in a shootout, Schmid earned the victory Friday. He’d follow that performance by making 43 saves on 45 shots and stopping both shooters in the shootout to earn a victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers.
Schmid is now up to a 7-7-1 record with a 2.28 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. Both his goals-against average and save percentage rank second among USHL goaltenders. He’s also won six of his last eight games dating back to Dec. 15.
